Story

Imagine the book that you are writing and the chapters that you have already written.  You have pictures of when you were first born.  You may have a page on your first words and the first time you walked.  Then you have stories of growing up and your days at school, beginning to learn, make friendships.  You remember the first date that you went on and the first care that you drove.  There are stories and pictures of your family going on vacation and doing things together.

Then maybe some significant moments in your life.  A time when you first noticed someone being pushed around at school.  The time when you someone took you under their wings to journey with you.  The death of a loved one.  The struggle that you have with an addiction.  The moment when you experienced deep failure.  All of these have in some way shaped who we are today.  The people around us have played a role in guiding us in our journey.  Our story, profoundly is intertwined with our makeup and how God wants to use us in the larger story of redemption.  We are not an accident.  Our lives have the fingerprints of God all over us.  Some things we may not understand.  There is a mysterious part of life that we must embrace.

But the pages ahead are still blank.  There are chapters that have yet to be written.  These chapters intersect with the lives and stories of others around us, of others in our city and in our world.  To understand who we are and what God has purposed for us, we must reflect upon our story.

As we look back, maybe we can ask two questions to guide us in this journey.

  1. What have been some of the hardest times of our lives?  How have they shaped us?
  2. What have been some of the greatest times of our lives?  How have they shaped us?

What remains unwritten in your story?  How do you see the remaining pages of your story intersecting with God's story?
